Dust off the Sustenuto pedal! What's that, you say? Read on to find out. From Calvin's release "Through High Places", "Mountain Memories" was written after Calvin returned from a trip through Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park. The majestic peaks at 14000' created the vision for this tune. Beginning with delicate alpine flowers, Mountain Memories builds into a Pike's Peak crescendo with hammering octaves in the bass finally climaxing with sustenuto pedal action at FFF. I suggest you get the DVD "The Journey I" to see what we've done with this song on the music video.
Oh yes, the middle pedal on all 3 pedal pianos is the sustenuto pedal. On grands, it is a true sustenuto, on most uprights, it is a bass sustain. Two pedal pianos don't have this pedal. The sustenuto pedal will sustain ONLY the notes that are down upon it's activation and continue sustaining only those notes as long as the pedal is down. In this song, the sustenuto pedal holds out the last octave played in the left hand and lets it ring while the right (forte) pedal independantly pedals the treble notes that follow.
Appropriate for the intermediate pianist, "Mountain Memories" is approximately 5 minutes. Click Here for a printable sample. Order Calvin's "Mountain Memories"
